Maryland State Flag

My home is in Maryland. It's the only home I have effur known, and I think it's a purrty good one. Me and meowmie wrote a poem about Maryland one time. If you would like to read it you may.
Maryland Poem

You can tell from the poem that Maryland has lots of good stuff here! One thing I bet you don't know about this state is that Jousting is our official state sport. Our furmily lives in Calvert County, and that is where the annual Jousting tournament is held every year. Yep it is! On the 4th Saturday in August. It's not bloody battles or anything like that. It's all skill and talent! Dukes and Duchesses riding on horseback at full speed trying to capture tiny little rings on their "sword" thingy... it's all in good fun, and when it's over everybody eats! Big Feast!

Here are some other intersting facts about Maryland:

Official State
Cat :

Calico Cats. It doesn't matter what breed - as long as it's Calico, it fits! The calico's were chosen because of their colors matching the colors in our flag, and the colors of our bird. (Does effury state have an official state cat? Noooooo... I do not think so! That in itself makes Maryland a furry special state!)

Official State D*g :

Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Bet ya couldn't guess that! We only live a few miles from the Chesapeake Bay and when we go to visit it there are usually some retrievers out swimming, so I guess it all makes sense!

Official State Bird :

Baltimore Oriole. Everything in Maryland is based on this color thing... the cat matches the bird, and the bird matches the ... NEXT!
Official State Insect :

Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly. See what I mean? (but did ya notice that with the exception of the d*g, Maryland really "caters" to the kitty. I love to sit in my window and watch the Orioles and the Checkerspots.)

We have lots of other state symbols too - even an official state dinosaur! But I think that's carrying things a little too fur, and so I'm only gonna tell ya about one more. The Maryland Blue Crab! I speak of this one because, being a cat, I LIKE IT! Meowmie and Paw get crabs a time or two each summer and bring them home to eat. Ohhhhh the smell! I LOVE the smell! And if I hang around under the table somebody is sure to drop a little piece here or there... and I get it! And usually, someone will pick a little and put it in my dish too. I have to tell ya ... this is the only people food I eat! I am furry finicky about that.

Here is a recipe I would like to share with you.
This is for THE best crab cake in all the land!
Make nO mistake about it!

Southern Maryland Chesapeake Bay Crab Cakes
1 pound crab meat (back fin is best!)
1/4 cup onion diced
2 cups fresh bread crumbs
2 tsp. Old Bay Seasoning
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup mayonaise
1/4 cup cream cheese, softened
1 tbsp dijon mustard
1 egg slightly beaten
vegetable oil
lemon wedges

Drain crab meat well and mix with onion, 1/2 cup of bread crumbs, the Old Bay seasoning, and salt. Beat mayonaise, cream cheese, mustard and egg together in a small bowl. Stir mayonaise mixture into crabmeat mixture and refridgerate for about 30 minutes. Put the rest of the bread crumbs in a shallow dish. Form crab mixture into 4 patties and carefully coat both sides with the extra bread crumbs. Over medium heat, fry crab cakes in vegetable oil until they are golden brown on both sides. These may be served with the lemon wedges. And some kitties and humans like them with tartar sauce. Meowmie says they also make yummy sandwiches, but don't ruin them with a cheap roll - splurge! A little lettuce and a thin slice of tomato... purrrrr purrrr purrrr.
